Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira reported on Sunday that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva showed his willingness to play a mediating role in resolving the tense crisis related to Venezuela, during his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Malaysia.
Vieira told reporters that “President Lula da Silva affirmed that South America is a region of peace, and expressed his readiness to be a negotiator on the Venezuelan issue to find solutions that satisfy both parties.”
This meeting comes at a time of escalating tension between Washington and Caracas, as White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt stated on August 19 that Trump is ready to use all forms of American power to combat drug trafficking, without excluding the possibility of carrying out a military operation in Venezuela.
In response, the Venezuelan government described those statements as provocative and an attempt to destabilize the security of the region, in addition to being a violation of international agreements stipulating that the Caribbean region should be free of weapons and nuclear weapons.
